In the Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle lists feelings that involve pleasure or pain—appetite, anger, fear, confidence, envy, joy, love, hate, longing, jealousy, pity—and says virtue is not the raw feeling. Virtue is a stable disposition (hexis) to feel and act toward the right people, at the right time, in the right degree, for the right reason.
