Ice Cold— Series Review

Rocco Schiavone: Ice Cold Murders (also known simply as Ice Cold Murders in some listings) is a captivating Italian crime drama available on Prime Video, based on Antonio Manzini’s popular novels. Starring Marco Giallini as the titular Deputy Police Chief Rocco Schiavone, the series follows this cranky, unorthodox detective who’s been “exiled” from his beloved Rome to the remote alpine town of Aosta in the Italian Alps after crossing the wrong people.

The lead character, Rocco, carries a heavy load of personal problems—he’s grieving the loss of his wife (who appears to him as a ghost in poignant moments), harbors deep regrets from his past, and often bends (or outright breaks) rules with his questionable ethics, marijuana use, and sharp-tongued attitude. These issues add layers of melancholy and complexity to his character, making him far more than just another brooding cop; he’s flawed, disillusioned, yet undeniably competent at solving crimes.

What really brings humor and warmth to the show is the supporting cast—Rocco’s team of local officers who bicker constantly like a loud, chaotic Italian family. Their banter, arguments, and everyday squabbles provide comic relief amid the darker murder investigations, creating a lively dynamic that feels authentic and endearing. It’s this motley crew’s interactions that often steal the scenes and keep the tone balanced between suspense and levity.

Visually, the series is a treat. The mountain scenery in the Italian Alps is stunning—snow-capped peaks, dramatic ski slopes, and the crisp, icy landscapes of Val d’Aosta serve as a breathtaking backdrop that contrasts sharply with the gritty crimes being solved. The cold, isolated setting enhances the atmosphere, making every case feel both intimate and expansive.

Overall, if you enjoy character-driven procedurals like Montalbano but with a grittier, more irreverent edge, this is a binge-worthy gem. The mysteries are solid, the acting (especially Giallini’s pitch-perfect portrayal) is excellent, and the blend of humor, heart, and intrigue makes it stand out. Highly recommended for fans of Italian crime dramas—it’s devilishly entertaining from start to finish!
